Milwaukee, WI - November 2, 2024: The BDPA Awards & Recognition Event held on November 2, 2024, was an inspiring celebration of Black excellence in technology, hosted by BDPA Milwaukee. This annual event brought together community members, industry professionals, and young talents, honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the tech landscape and excelled in coding and other technical skills.
The evening commenced with opening remarks from N. Lynette McNeely, setting an encouraging tone for the event. Sequona Hastings followed with a warm welcome, expressing BDPA Milwaukee’s mission to empower Black technologists and foster community growth.
Albert Thomas, representing BDPA 2024, shared insights into the organization’s vision and future goals, highlighting the ongoing need for diversity in tech.
One of the most moving segments of the event was the Parent/Student Comments, where students from BDPA’s High School Computer Competition (HSCC) and their parents shared their journeys, underscoring the importance of accessible STEM education.
Kathy Ellis-Crowder’s talk on "21st Century Skills" resonated with attendees, emphasizing how these skills are shaping the future workforce.
The Recognition Awards, presented by Fred Reed and Scott Kempen, honored those who have demonstrated remarkable dedication to BDPA’s mission, including instructors who have guided and mentored young talents in their tech pursuits. Albert Thomas acknowledged the critical role of instructors in fostering a love for technology and lifelong learning.
