The demand for skilled professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) continues to grow rapidly. Yet, many young people, especially from underrepresented communities, face barriers to entering these fields. The Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) Milwaukee Chapter is addressing this challenge head-on with its annual Computer Coding Program. This initiative offers middle and high school students a chance to build real-world coding skills, boost their confidence, and explore pathways into STEM careers. The program welcomes all students regardless of race or background, creating an inclusive environment where young learners can thrive.
Brandi Iberia recently spoke with Rosemary Smith, President of the Milwaukee BDPA Chapter, and Lynnette McNeely, Executive Vice President and Webmaster, to learn how this program is making a difference in the lives of local youth.
The Need for Accessible Coding Education
Technology shapes nearly every aspect of modern life, yet access to quality coding education remains uneven. Many schools lack the resources or specialized teachers to provide hands-on programming experience. This gap limits students’ opportunities to develop skills that are increasingly essential in the job market.
The BDPA Milwaukee Chapter recognized this gap and created a program that goes beyond traditional classroom learning. It offers students practical coding lessons paired with mentorship and real-world projects. This approach helps students see the relevance of coding and builds their confidence to pursue STEM careers.
How the BDPA Milwaukee Chapter’s Program Works
The Computer Coding Program runs annually and targets middle and high school students across Milwaukee. It is open to all students, emphasizing inclusivity and diversity. The program focuses on:
Hands-on coding experience: Students learn languages such as Python, JavaScript, and HTML/CSS through interactive lessons.
Project-based learning: Participants build real applications, websites, or games, applying what they learn in a tangible way.
Mentorship: Experienced professionals from the BDPA network guide students, offering advice and career insights.
Career pathways: The program introduces students to various STEM careers and helps them plan their educational journey.
Rosemary Smith highlights that the program’s goal is not just to teach coding but to build confidence and open doors for students who might not otherwise consider STEM fields.
Stories of Impact: Changing Lives Through Coding
Many students who have participated in the BDPA Milwaukee Chapter’s program share stories of transformation. For example, one high school participant initially struggled with math and science but found coding to be an engaging way to apply logical thinking. With mentorship and practice, this student developed a mobile app prototype and gained the confidence to pursue computer science in college.
Another middle school student used the program to explore creative problem-solving. By building a website for a local community project, the student saw how technology can make a difference in real life. This experience sparked an interest in software development and community service.
These stories reflect the program’s success in making STEM education accessible and relevant.

Building Confidence and Community
Beyond technical skills, the program fosters a supportive community. Students connect with peers who share their interests and mentors who understand their challenges. This network helps reduce feelings of isolation that many young learners face in STEM.
Lynnette McNeely emphasizes that the program creates a safe space where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. This environment encourages persistence and resilience, qualities essential for success in any field.
The community aspect also extends to families and schools. BDPA Milwaukee works closely with educators and parents to support students’ learning journeys and celebrate their achievements.
Preparing Students for STEM Careers
The BDPA Milwaukee Chapter’s program does more than teach coding. It prepares students for future careers by:
Introducing them to various STEM roles and industries.
Providing guidance on educational pathways, including college and technical training.
Offering networking opportunities with professionals and local companies.
Encouraging participation in coding competitions and hackathons.
This comprehensive approach helps students understand the broader context of their skills and motivates them to set long-term goals.
How to Get Involved or Support the Program
The success of the BDPA Milwaukee Chapter’s Computer Coding Program depends on community support. Parents, educators, and local businesses can contribute by:
Encouraging students to join the program.
Providing financial support or resources such as laptops and software.
Promoting awareness of the program in schools and community centers.
By working together, the community can help expand access to coding education and create more opportunities for young people.
